Teaching Strategies

Reading Library – The Spanish library contains books which range from beginner to advanced levels.  Students will choose books on a level that they are comfortable with and will read silently for 20 to 30 minutes.  They are allowed to use a dictionary and to keep a list of words that they are unfamiliar with.  At the end of each reading session, students take about 1 or 2 minutes to write a two to three sentence summary of what they read in the target language.  They also record the book, author and date that in which the reading took place.  This enables the student to remember what he/ she read the time before so that they can pick up where they left of the next time.  Through this activity students can reinforce and recognize vocabulary already learned in a context while also extending their knowledge to new vocabulary words.

Other reading skills – The textbook Continuemos contains a section called Lecturas periodisticas.  Students read lecturas followed by comprehension questions.  There are also reading throughout the text book as well that are not included in this section.  Before each of these sections there is something called Saber leer and in this section the students receive information to grow their reading skills and to read for understanding.

I also have a magazine that the students will be reading out of called Think Spanish.  There are many authentic articles in these magazines that have history and culture information that the students can read and learn about along with a grammar review in the back of the magazine.  This magazine is accompanied by an audio CD as well.

Listening skills – The Continuemos book comes with an audio CD for listening activities.  Also, there is a separate student interactive CD-ROM

Writing skills – Each chapter of Continuemos contains a “piense y escriba” section to help develop students writing skills and pieces of advice to help the students write a good developed paper on a particular topic.  The student interactive CD-ROM also contains a writing section as well and teaches students how to write all kinds of genres.

Speaking skills – Continuemos provides brief roll playing for the students to practice called “Una encuesta, ¿Qué dirían ustedes?, ¡De ustedes depende! and  Mesa redonda/debate”.  Of course the supplemental book “Conversemos” will be used primarily for student to practice speaking also.
