2007-2008 Indian Maidens

Dance Class

 

General Information:

The WNGA Indian Maidens Dance Class is offered as a physical education or fine arts credit to students in the ninth grade. The class will consist of the following:

First Nine Weeks: A study of and participation in fitness training and conditioning, the basics of dance and drill team technique.

Second Nine Weeks: A continuation of the first nine weeks and a study of and participation in kick, jazz and ballet techniques.

Third Nine Weeks: A continuation of the first and second nine weeks and a study of and participation in lyrical/contemporary, modern and tap techniques.

Fourth Nine Weeks: A continuation of the year and a study of and participation in the history of dance and choreography skills.

 

Daily activities will include stretching and warming-up, across the floor combinations, technique exercises and learning/polishing various routines. There will be periodic skills tests to assess individual mastery of the area or technique currently being studied.

 

From the WHS Cherokee Charmer Constitution: Article 8. Indian Maidens:

Indian Maidens is the Ninth Grade open enrollment dance technique class at the Waxahachie Ninth Grade Academy that may be taken for    physical education or fine arts credit. Class members do not have to tryout. However, being an Indian Maiden is a privilege. Therefore, the instructor may dismiss a class member at any time for any reason the instructor deems necessary – lack of participation, apathy, absences, disrespect, failing grades, etc.

One to five class members may be chosen form the Maidens class as freshman representatives to assist the instructor/director.

Indian Maidens is the budding program for students who may wish to audition for the Waxahachie High School Cherokee Charmers (grades 10-12).

Indian Maidens are not members of the Cherokee Charmer Drill Team.

Indian Maidens will have specified dance attire to purchase in order to properly learn/practice dance skills.

Indian Maidens may have occasional performances as specified by the director to promote dance experience, school spirit, and educational       opportunities. (For example: Freshman basketball games and spring show and/or others as approved by instructor/director.)

If a student is assigned ISS twice in a semester or is suspended twice in a semester, the student will be dismissed from the Indian Maidens dance class.

 

Dance Attire: Members of the Maidens Dance Class will need the following attire:

Black lycra leotard (fitted black t-shirt or tank that does not expose stomach is acceptable), black lycra jazz pants, toast tights, black dance sneakers, a dance cover-up (wind pants, wind shorts, or wrap dance skirt).

The dance attire items may be (but do not have to be) purchased through Dance Wear Plus:

In addition, Maidens will order a custom t-shirt which costs $10 and poms which cost $15.

Orders will be made through the director and t-shirts must be paid for before the order is placed.

 

Grading:

Daily Grades: 50%

Includes dressing out in proper dance attire and participating in daily activities with a good attitude;

A participation grade will be calculated every two weeks: 20 points will be deducted from the daily participation grade for each class that a student does not dress out and/or participate. Daily grades will also include skills assessment checks and knowledge assessment quizzes.

***Note: When a student does not dress out, the student must observe, write and submit a critique of the dance class to the instructor. Partial participation points may be awarded to the student upon instructor’s consent. A student may not sit out more than once without a doctor’s note per nine weeks.

Major Grades: 50%

Includes skills and written tests, dance projects, choreography assignments, and performances.
