       McDougell. Little  -American Literature  (The Crucible, Early America selections such as Bradford, Smith, Columbus,  Indian lit., etc.)

Objectives:      Students will read/view The Scarlet Letter to analyze Hawthorne’s themes (ie. hypocrisy,                                                     revenge,  alienation,  the effects of sin on the individual,  man’s inhumanity to man, etc.) and relate them to contemporary society.  Additionally, students will develop an understanding of the Colonial Period in American history.

Students will also do a comparative study of Puritanism with The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible ( include background study on McCarthyism and look for current day witchhunts.).

            Vocabulary development will occur through an analysis of diction in regard to the literary selections..

 Novel content will serve as a building basis for future literary studies.  Study of The Quiz Show will continue the  analysis of themes found in Hawthorne’s/Miller’s  works.

            Weekly vocabulary quizzes – SAT development

Selections from the literature text will be used to increase students awareness of the Colonial Period and the literary genres of the period.

Practice sentence completions, analogies, and reading comprehension in preparation for the October PSAT.

Literature exams will be given at the completion of each literary unit.  Periodic quizzes are used to assess students’ reading.
