Syllabus

Consistent with Texas Education Code, §28.002(h) for grades K through 12, students build a foundation for understanding of our world on international, national, regional, state and community levels through social studies subjects. World Geography in the 9th grade examines humanity in a spatial context, integrating the eight strands of essential knowledge and skills for social studies so that students will be able describe the influence of geography on past, present, and current events.

A significant portion of the World Geography course at the Waxahachie Ninth Grade Academy centers on the processes that shape patterns in the physical environment, the characteristics of major landforms, climates, and ecosystems, and the interrelationship between these features of the earth.  Additionally, the course focuses on the political, economic, and social processes that shape the cultural patterns of regions. Types and patterns of settlement, the distribution and movement of world population, relationships among people, places, and environments, and the concept of region are all considered.

Problem-solving and decision-making skills will be developed through a variety of learning experiences.  In the process, students of World Geography analyze how location affects economic activities in different economic systems throughout the world, they identify the processes that influence political divisions of the planet, and they analyze how different points of view affect the development of public policies. Students also compare how components of culture shape the characteristics of regions and they analyze the impact of technology and human modifications on the physical environment.
