Art I is a course open to all high school students. It covers the fundamentals of the visual arts. Emphasis is placed on providing students with a positive experience as they acquire basic drawing and painting skills. The students study printmaking and sculpture during the Spring Semester.
In addition to the basic curriculum, students are introduced to the history of the visual arts through lectures about major art periods and major artists. These lectures are linked to problem solving activities to be completed by the students.
Students are also encouraged to produce original art works outside of class. They submit these works for critique and receive extra credit on their grade. In order to qualify for extra credit, all regular class work must be completed and turned in on the due date.
The Art I class is a prerequisite for the advanced courses offered in the fine arts department.
