Major software packages learned in Fall Semester
Training in Microsoft Word
Students will use Office 2000 software and will work hands on with the textbook and the instructor as resource person, to become proficient in Microsoft Word. Teacher prepared projects will be utilized to teach students to complete real-world activities, i.e., business letters, reports, mail merge, etc.
Training in Microsoft Excel
Students will use Office 2000 software and will work independently on the computer, to become proficient in Microsoft Excel. Teacher prepared projects are interjected to teach students to complete real-world activities, i.e., payrolls, invoices, etc.
Spring Semester Course Syllabus or MaterialMajor software packages learned in Spring Semester
Training in Microsoft Access
Students will use Office 2000 software and will work independently in the textbook to become proficient in Microsoft Access. The teacher will serve as resource for students' questions. Students will then do teacher-prepared projects that are similar to real-life databases.
Training in Microsoft PowerPoint
Students will learn this software in order to learn to make presentations using the computer.
After learning the software, students will research topics of their choice on the Internet and in periodicals in order to gather material for a presentation utilizing Power Point. Students will give their presentation to the entire class.
Other projects
Simulations of three different companies:
Students will utilize the skills learned first semester in MS Word and MS Excel to prepare correspondence, purchase orders, invoices, bank statements, etc. as though employed by the company.
Activities geared toward preparing the student for applying for a job:
Unit includes searching ads, writing letter of application, preparing resumes, and interviewing experience.
Office Administration Co-Op
In office Co-op, students learn all of the above software packages in addition to learning to operate the Dictaphone, 10-key calculator, and filing. Second year students do advanced projects in all four software packages; some second year students learn Adobe Pagemaker, which is a desktop publishing package that is very popular in the business/publishing field. Several business simulations will be used to integrate skills learned in Microsoft Office and in students' office positions.
Employment for students will be in offices in Waxahachie and the metroplex area.
