8.15-16.2005 – <Journal entry: What are your goals?, DOL, TAKS Practice> Rules, procedures and policies, Issue GUM books (for classroom use only), Pass out syllabi, lit terms wkshts, Letter to parents, Testing Dates (PSAT, TAKS, etc.), Salary schedule brochures, Restroom passes, student handbooks, Student info. sheets, Annual theme (Goals) Homework: Have Journal folders ready to use for next class period. Be prepared for rules and procedures quiz!!!
8.17-18.2005 – <Journal entry: Write about a time when you felt negatively judged, DOL, TAKS Practice> Introduction to Scarlet Letter, Discuss: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Historical Background, The Prison Door. Read: Ch. 1. Analyze Symbolism (colors, 3, etc.). Set up novel: characters, background plot. Hand out Study Guide Packet. To be turned in day of test for completion grade. If time: Watch Part I of Scarlet Letter.
8.19-22.2005 – <Journal entry: Would you a lie for a friend, why or why not? DOL, TAKS Practice> Watch Part I of Scarlet Letter video. Grammar- Diagnostic handout; review parts of speech, p. 26 in lit. book; Assign part A (“finding” or “identifying” section) for each question missed as homework; see chart on p. 5 in grammar for guideline on what to assign to whom. (If student misses more than 4 questions, only 4 will be due next class period. The remainder of the assignment will be due next time, and tutoring will be recommended.)
8.23-24.2005- <Journal entry: What one person means the most to you and why? DOL, TAKS Practice> Discuss Part I of Scarlet Letter (5 questions activity). Quiz over Part I. Begin Watching Part II of Scarlet Letter (don’t go past Ch. 12 scaffold scene). Discuss Symbols, completing packet as we go. Grammar: Review and quiz over parts of speech. Take up grammar HW from last time.
8.25-26.2005- <Journal entry: Describe a time in your life when you felt bitter toward another person. DOL, TAKS Practice> Complete Part II of Scarlet Letter (except for Scaffold scene ch. 12). Grammar: Diagnostic quiz for parts of a sentence, p. 25 grammar book; Study Subjects and Predicates p. 26, show how to diagram subj/verb.
8.29-30.2005- <Journal entry: Describe a time in your life when you felt betrayed. DOL, TAKS Practice> Read Ch. 12… Second Scaffold Scene. Grammar: Study Compound sentence parts, pp.29-31 grammar book, show how to diagram compound sentence parts. Practice; Complete parts A and B on GUM p. 23

Go over worksheet pp.33-34 together. Grammar: Complements, pp.35-37. Show how to diagram direct objects, indirect objects, objective complements; subject complements.

Homework: Students will complete characterization comparison wksht. p.34. Grammar: Review Complements and diagramming. Homework: GUM pp. 31-32
